Daredevil and Punisher scene analysis- debate on morality of killing
For my media class, I was asked to make a scene analysis on one scene from any film or television show no longer than 3 minutes in my winter holidays. So, while thinking of a scene that left a mark in me, I saw that a teaser trailer for a new Daredevil show came out, Daredevil: Born again. It made me think of the original show. And then I remember a scene from it that I will never forget. The daredevil and punisher morality of killing debate scene.
Camera
movement, angles, and shot
The establishing shot introduced the environment and context of it. That the characters are on the roof of a building and punisher is messing around with some equipment, presumably to use on dare devil who we then see a medium shot chained up and trying to escape but can’t. A medium shot is used again but as daredevil is chained sitting and punisher is crouching to be on his level. A high angle for punisher is used to show that the punisher has the power in this situation. But, interestingly daredevil is not shown in a low angle shot for weakness. Instead, it is a hip level shot suggesting that the points he brought are valid and matter too. The camera movement are just slow pans and tilts.
Sound:
the sound of the cars beeping an other city sounds also too enhance the
realism. Both had great voices so the dialogue felt really nice to hear and we
the audience were kept engages. The sound of the gun trigger was a nice touch
as it could be felt. The silence of no back ground music was better for the
scene as we should be focusing on the dialogue as the scene is trying to
present contrasting viewpoints.
Editing:
there are many inserts, a shot reverse shot is one of the highlights. Long
takes were also done so that the audiences engage in the narrative.
Representation is clearly present as both are supposed to be in lower classes but different circumstances. Punisher is was veteran, as he served in the afghan war and clearly has P.T.S.D from the experience which was made worse by the horrific killing of his family. Daredevil is a blind man which is great for representation and has a professional job. Daredevil has also gone through loss of family members from horrific ways too.
Due to both of their circumstances having similarities and differences, it lead to them having completely polar opposites viewson the topic, morality of killing of any person even if they had done terrible things. The scene had a deep impact in me because it conveyed an argument that I find interesting and they did it in a intriguing way. Moreover, the scene display brilliant dialogue of the and also deepened our understanding of the characters as people and their relationship.
